Preview/Judgement

April 7, 2010

Here are some images I took today on my digital camera. I shot two rolls of black and white film which I’m hoping to develop tomorrow.

My three questions would be:

1) How could I add to the series to improve my idea?

2)Would experimenting with developing techniques strength or weaken my images?

3)What do you think is ‘missing’ from the series? Would you like to see more or less of the model?

Tentative schedule-

week 1- re-shoot if necessary, second shoot with model, in digital.

week 2- start experimenting with 8×10 prints, figure out technique that works best.

week 3- PRINT

week 4- PRINT

week 5- PRINT and mount

Has your view of the project changed since you started working with the model? What, again, is the goal of the piece? Restate the goal (taking into account these images), and lets keep talking. I remember the technique you showed me a while back. There is no technology in the shot, and the dress doesn’t scream a year to me, so I guess you could affect these images and make them look really old (if that was the goal). But, let’s talk about the goal is again and talk about whether or not it feels like you are heading down that path. Developing techniques… Again, I think that really depends on the goal of the piece. What is missing? I’m not a big fan of the one with her hiding behind the twig (just seems like an image I’ve seen before). It feels like you might have a few different approaches going on here. Some of the shots are very flat, where others show dimension (foreground, mid, bg and z axis movement in composition) where still others have a tilted horizon… Is it a progression (maybe?). I gravitate towards the ones with her standing in front of the trees (the many vertical shapes almost acting as bars/ trapping her). I’d like to see some with trees in front of her too, blocking her view, maybe even having focus in the foreground, blurring her out… Is she the focus, or the environment? So, if you could, restate what you feel is the goal/ theme of the shoot as it stands now and let’s keep talking about it this week. Glad you were able to post these digital shots. TOM
